Causes of Infertility >> Endometriosis

Endometriosis is found in 40% of couples who have difficulty conceiving.   It occurs when tissue like lining of the uterus develops in the pelvic area and on the uterus, tubes or ovaries.   Endometriosis affects fertility by damaging the pelvic organs, by releasing chemicals and proteins into the pelvic cavity which affect fertilization of eggs, and probably by changing the environment inside the uterus when an embryo (fertilized egg) implants.

The ovaries may contain cysts which contain endometriosis. These are called endometrioma's and are often referred to as chocolate cysts because of their appearance.

Endometrioma's on the ovary may need to be surgically removed.   Laparoscopic surgery for women with endometriosis may be necessary and is undertaken by our Medical Director and other Clinicians when needed.

Ballarat IVF also provides an endometriosis clinic, which has a wide range of written information and resources available.
