Causes of Infertility >> Unexplained Infertility

The term unexplained infertility is used when all known diagnoses of infertility have been eliminated in the course of a couple, or woman's investigation.

There are causes of infertility that are beyond our level of understanding and at present are not able to be tested for. In these situations all aspects of the treatment are reviewed carefully and adjusted. It may be necessary to repeat certain tests.

Once it has been shown that a woman is ovulating, that the male partner's sperm counts are normal and that the fallopian tubes are open, a diagnosis of unexplained infertility may be made.   We now know, however, that factors such as problems with the connection process between the egg and sperm can also influence fertility.   Infections in the cervix or uterus can cause infertility.

Many women who seem to have "unexplained" infertility will be shown to have endometriosis when a laparoscopy is performed.
