Donor Programs >> Sperm Donors

For many infertile couples sperm donation is the only way they will ever experience the joys of parenthood.

Sperm donation represents a real chance of conception for women whose partners cannot produce healthy sperm.

All donors are thoroughly screened after volunteering to donate.   Donors must have a clean bill of health in their medical and family history in terms of inheritable conditions, and undergo a full

medical examination by a specialist physician.   Donor's blood is tested for HIV (the AIDS virus), Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, CMV and syphilis and other genetic conditions.

Only donors who pass all these tests have their semen frozen for storage. The semen is held in quarantine for six months and the donor is retested for HIV prior to the semen being released for use in the treatment of women through Donor Insemination.

Sperm can be donated by known or anonymous donors.   It is a legal requirement in Victoria that identifying details about the donor are recorded. Children born from donor sperm have the right to gain access to this information once they reach 18 years of age.
